Emails to RSOs

Hi [group],

My name is Tim O’Shea and I serve as the Executive Director of Democracy onAir, a 501c3 nonprofit organization seeking to improve the political information and accountability on the state level in order to strengthen American democracy. In short, we’re recruiting interns for the next month or so, and students at Virginia universities (especially [school]) would be ideal candidates for us, so I was hoping you could help us recruit.

We’re piloting our operation in Virginia as the Virginia Elections & Governance Hub. The Hub is essentially going to be the best centralized resource on state political information in VA, and we’re launching it officially on Sept 19th.

Hi [Name],

My name is Tim O’Shea and I serve as the Executive Director of Democracy onAir, a 501c3 nonprofit organization seeking to improve the political information and accountability on the state level in order to strengthen American democracy. I’m also a recent GMU grad, and I got your information from Camden Layton. In short, we’re recruiting interns for the next month or so, and SG members at Virginia universities (especially [school]) would be ideal candidates for us, so I was hoping you could help us recruit.

Hi [Name],

Below are some initial items for your consideration with the start to your internship.

1 – As best as you can, add your weekly commitments to the Notes section of the Team People doc. This way we know what we consistently shouldn’t schedule with you.

2 – I would take the time to go in and add your education, past experiences, and such to your Hub profile. Your Hub login info is username: [username], password: [password]. From there just hit the pen symbol in the top right to edit your member post.
3 – Since you are likely to also be doing some curation on some politicians as well, please send me the names of 5 Delegates or Senators from [region] whose profiles you would like to update. this sheet. Feel free to take some time to go through the Hub and read some profiles and pick people you find interesting. The steps for Curating Politician Posts can be found at the top of

4 – As I believe we discussed in your interview, We’re happy to count hours towards online trainings and classes in matters relevant to our mission towards your hour requirement. You can send me any class or training you like and I can approve it, but below are some sample ones.

Dear [Name],

I hope this finds you well. I’m reaching out on behalf of Democracy onAir, a nonprofit working to build grassroots networks of political information, beginning in Virginia and expanding to other states in 2020. We use proprietary software to enable volunteers to rapidly and easily maintain information Hubs on state and local politicians and policy issues. We are helping bring state politics into the 21st century.

Given [you/your organization’s] work in [state politics/civics/civic engagement, etc], we believe you would make a strong sponsor on our Virginia Elections & Governance Hub. We would create a specialized post for you to showcase your organization and your work on our information Hub at a cost of only $10 per month to you. We hope you will consider this opportunity to support this effort to strengthen civic engagement in a critical space in our democracy.

If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to myself or our Outreach Director, [Name], at [email].

Onward,
