Economy

Jobs

Monty has been working to bring good, high paying jobs to our community.  Working with the V3 (Virginia Values Veterans) he is making sure that we can attract and retain highly skilled and qualified workers and keep them on the Virginia peninsula. His work in the General Assembly has earned him the Champion of Free Enterprise Award from the Chamber of Commerce.

The Mason plan:

  • Invest in small businesses so they can create jobs and help our area thrive and grow.
  • Provide funding to grow the tourism industry by supporting small businesses that promote tourism.
  • Continue to work with and support the Economic Development Authorities, local Chambers of Commerce, and local governments promoting economic expansion opportunities in the regio

Education

Education is the lifeblood that drives our economy.  Monty has championed Standards of Learning reforms, which will improve the quality of all the schools in our community, and help our kids, no matter where they live or their economic background.

Monty will continue to fight to expand Pre-K so that all children are prepared when they enter the school system and given the same opportunity to succeed.  He led the fight to eliminate the bureaucratic grading scale that unfairly targeted many Peninsula schools.  Monty understands the importance of history to our region, and worked to place a representative of Colonial Williamsburg on the Standards of Learning Commission.

Infrastructure

Transportation

A thriving transportation system is critical to a well-balanced economy.  Monty has been instrumental in bringing the topic of transit to the forefront on the Peninsula.  He has coordinated with other public officials to hold community meetings on transit and is working to expand public transit in the region.  He has worked closely with Hampton Roads Transit and WATA to push for more attention to this issue. He is currently working with area officials to provide transit to Lackey Free Clinic, which treats more than a thousand low-income patients each year but is located three miles from the nearest bus stop.

Mason has fought to increase funding for our roads to reduce traffic congestion and commute times. Monty is focused on keeping the momentum to get the third leg of the I-64 expansion funded and built.  Monty will continue to work to improve our roads and reduce commute times.

Social Security

We must always support seniors who have paved the way for the successes we have today.  Monty is committed to making sure more seniors can get in-home services and to keep property taxes low so more seniors can stay in their homes.  Monty has fought for harsh penalties for those who take advantage of our senior citizens by committing computer and telephone fraud.  He has also promoted legislation giving the state the authority to shut down any senior facility that is not properly licensed.  Monty has been a champion of seniors and fighting to do what is right.

Veterans

Our Veterans who have sacrificed so much for our freedom deserve to be treated with dignity, honor, and respect when they come home.  Monty has helped to expand employment opportunities for veterans by working with V3 (Virginia Values Veterans) to help employers find veterans for job openings.  He is working across the aisle to expand the number of V3 certified companies on the VA peninsula to keep our veterans in the area and expand our workforce!

Monty helped lead the way to pass a bill to ensure that children of active duty service members receive the best education possible.  He has also fought to allow National Guard and active duty servicemen and women based in Virginia to receive in-state tuition.

Monty worked with the Department of Veteran Affairs and Community College System to pass legislation to allow veterans to count their military training towards classes that they take.  This will standardize the audit acceptance process and allow veterans to get the most out of their GI Bill benefits.
