Adia McLaughlin

My name is Adia McLaughlin and I am Chapter Director for Democracy onAir and President of the GMU onAir Chapter.

I am a senior at George Mason University majoring in Government and International Politics and Communications with a concentration in broadcast journalism.

Alongside my work with Democracy onAir, I am involved with several student organizations including the Honor’s College, the NAACP, my sorority Alpha Omicron Pi, and Student Government where I am the Student Body Vice President.

I have always been interested in civic engagement, but with my schedule staying informed does prove itself to be difficult. The hub makes engagement not only easy but hands-on for interested students like myself.

I first became an intern with Democracy onAir and Virginia onAir Hub Coordinator in the Spring of 2o19 as part of my studies in the Global Politics Fellowship Program through the Schar School of Policy and Government. As an intern, I worked and founded the first onAir Chapter at a university.

Work Experience

  • OnAir Chapter Coordinator
    Democracy onAir
    2019 to present

I coordinate the George Mason University chapter whose members include undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends of GMU. As well as supervise and train Chapter members in best ways to curate politician and district profiles (especially for districts where they are registered to vote). As part of their profile curation, chapter members will be the conduit for voter questions and politician answers and moderating comments and forums.
In my role I also collaborate with Mason student organizations to plan and implement special on-campus events such as Town Halls, Candidate Days, and forums that will be live-streamed and archived via the Hub’s YouTube channel and the Virginia Elections and Government Hub. I prepare and follow through on the application of an undergraduate club (Student Organization) as part of the GMU onAir chapter and serve as the President. And assist chapter members with enhancing their Hub profiles and authoring posts on relevant state issues as well as how to do effective video interviews of politicians using a smartphone and showing their staff how to produce live-streamed updates via YouTube Live with YouTube chat capability.
