State of the Commonwealth Address 2023
WTVR CBS 6 January 11, 2023 (01:04:00)

Governor Glenn Youngkin (R – Virginia) deliver the annual State of the Commonwealth on Wednesday afternoon at the Virginia Capitol. Youngkin said Virginia was in a better place than it was a year ago, but still had work to do.

RICHMOND, VA – Governor Youngkin today announced that applications are now being accepted for the 2023 Governor’s Fellows Program. The Governor’s Fellows Program is a prestigious opportunity for rising seniors and recent graduates to get a firsthand look at the executive branch in action. Since 1982, fellows have worked alongside the Governor’s Cabinet and staff, learning about state government and assisting in essential work for the Commonwealth.

“We are excited to welcome the next generation of leaders to kick off their careers with our administration,” said Governor Glenn Youngkin. “The Governor’s Fellows Program is a unique opportunity for Virginia students to experience public service first-hand and gain essential work skills for their future.”

During their time in service to the Commonwealth, Governor’s fellows have the opportunity to learn from special guest speakers who are leaders in state government and beyond. Fellows also experience state government on the road, visiting state government agencies and historic sites that have shaped our past and are improving our future.

“I can’t say enough good things about the Governor’s Fellow Program. It was transformative for both my personal development and professional career post-graduation,” said Ciara Rascona, 2022 Governor’s Fellow. “I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for the opportunity to learn, collaborate, and grow. I gained lifelong friends while having the opportunity to work across various secretariats that gave me valuable insights into Virginia’s government.”

“It was the best thing I did after graduation. I worked with Cabinet members to hone in on my academic skills and apply them in an arena that had real implications, connecting theory to practice. I felt valued as a learner and I’m grateful for everyone involved for teaching me about the nuances of Virginia’s government, turning me into a leader and policy expert who is now in the administration full time,” said Calvin Hogg, 2022 Governor’s Fellow.

Qualified applicants must be rising college seniors, graduating seniors, or graduate students. All Virginia college and university students are eligible to apply. Virginia residents who attend out-of-state colleges and universities are also eligible. Both public and private college and university students are encouraged to apply.

The selection of fellows is based solely on merit. The Fellows Program does not discriminate on the basis of race, sex, color, national origin, religion, sexual orientation, age, disability, or veteran status.

The deadline to apply for the Governor’s Fellows Program is Sunday, March 5, 2023. Interviews will begin on March 13, 2023. Applicants will be advised on decisions beginning on April 14, 2023. The program runs from June 1, 2023 through July 28, 2023.

To apply, visit the Governor’s Fellows Program website and send the required recommendation letters to the address below:

Youngkin at a crossroads
Axios, Josh KraushaarJanuary 11, 2023

Virginia Republicans’ defeat in a state Senate special election Tuesday night has left Gov. Glenn Youngkin at a political crossroads, threatening to derail the national ambitions of one of the GOP’s most promising rising stars.

Why it matters: Youngkin’s efforts to build a robust governing record ahead of a possible 2024 presidential campaign — including closely watched plans for a stricter abortion ban — are at risk.

Driving the news: Democrat Aaron Rouse declared victory over Republican Kevin Adams in the Virginia Beach-based seat vacated by former GOP state State Jen Kiggans, who was elected to Congress in November.

  • The contest was held in a textbook swing district: It backed Kiggans in 2019, President Biden in 2020 and Youngkin in 2021.
  • Rouse focused his campaign message on protecting abortion rights, campaigning against Youngkin’s proposal for a 15-week ban that was formally introduced in the Virginia legislature on Wednesday.

About a week after Youngkin’s inauguration, All Things Considered likened Youngkin’s political ideology to that of former president Donald Trump, writing that although Youngkin “came to power as a sort of establishment Republican politician, a businessman who spoke to suburban families” and who “gave off … [a] dad-next-door image”, his administration quickly began “leaning into a lot of the same themes as the former president”. A year into Youngkin’s governorship, The Washington Post called Youngkin “famous for being just Trumpy enough to woo MAGA Republicans without alienating more moderate voters”. The newspaper summed up Youngkin’s political style by calling him “a genial but aggressive culture warrior who has treaded cautiously with Trump and cozied up to election deniers.”[202] As governor, Youngkin subjected many executive branch positions to litmus tests on abortion, critical race theory, and transgender policies.

During the 2022 United States elections, Youngkin campaigned frequently for Republicans in other states, supporting both candidates who had embraced Trump’s false claims about the 2020 election and those who had not. This led to The Washington Post writing that Youngkin had “demonstrated uncommon flexibility on an issue that for others…represents a bright line.”[203] Youngkin’s refusal to distance himself from conspiracy theorists within his own party has elicited criticism from some Republicans, such as Liz Cheney.

Election Results

In January 2021, Youngkin announced that he would seek the Republican Party of Virginia’s nomination for governor of Virginia. Youngkin’s personal wealth gave him the ability to self-fund his candidacy, and he spent at least $5.5 million of his own money on his primary campaign. Youngkin was endorsed by Ted Cruz during the primary; Cruz has described Youngkin as a close family friend. Youngkin had previously donated to Cruz’s 2018 re-election campaign.

On November 2, 2021, Youngkin defeated McAuliffe, 50.58%–48.64%. Before the 2021 elections, Republicans had not prevailed in a statewide race in Virginia since 2009.

Youngkin’s victory was attributed to a coalition of voters including suburban residents who had supported Joe Biden in 2020 and Trump supporters.
